Little Shop of Horrors is a rock musical by composer Alan Menken and writer Howard Ashman (the team who went on to create The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, and The Lion King for Disney). The music is in the style of 1960's rock and roll, doo-wop and early Motown. The original Broadway production won several awards including the 1982-1983 New York Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Musical, the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Musical, the Outer Critics Circle Award. At the time it was the third-longest running musical and the highest-grossing production in off-Broadway history. Little Shop of Horrors was made into a successful film in 1986, starring Rick Moranis and Steve Martin.
